Description

Blackberry Dumplings are a cozy and comforting dessert made with sweet blackberries simmered in syrup and topped with soft, fluffy dumplings. Perfect for summer gatherings or cool evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen, thawed)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Rinse the blackberries and remove any stems.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine blackberries, sugar, and water. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally, until it simmers and berries break down (5–7 minutes). Remove from heat.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Gradually add wet ingredients to the dry, stirring just until combined (do not overmix).
  4. Return the blackberry sauce to a simmer. Drop heaping spoonfuls of batter into the sauce, spacing them out.
  5. Cover with a lid and cook for 15–20 minutes without lifting the lid, until dumplings are puffed and fluffy.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Do not lift the lid while dumplings are cooking, as steam is essential for their texture.
  • Small lumps in batter are fine—avoid overmixing.
  • Substitute berries like raspberries or diced peaches for variety.
  • For gluten-free or dairy-free versions, see substitutions above.
