Description

A delightful Chocolate French Toast Casserole that combines rich chocolate flavors with the comforting texture of French toast, perfect for brunch or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups of sourdough bread, cubed (about 1 loaf)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups of milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (to taste)
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the sourdough bread into 1-inch cubes and place them evenly in the greased baking dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Press down gently with a spatula and sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or refrigerate overnight.
  6. Remove the cover and bake for 45-55 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let it cool for about 10 minutes and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free option, use almond or coconut milk.
  • Swap granulated sugar for maple syrup or honey.
  • Use gluten-free bread for gluten-sensitive diets.
  • Add a splash of coffee for a richer flavor.
