Description
Churro sticks are crispy, golden pastries with a fluffy interior, coated in cinnamon sugar. Originating from Spanish and Mexican traditions, they are perfect for festive occasions and sweet cravings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the butter melts and the mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat.
- Add flour all at once and stir vigorously until a smooth dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 2 minutes).
- Let the dough cool for 5 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until the dough is smooth and shiny.
- Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Preheat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Pipe dough directly into the hot oil, cutting into 4–6 inch lengths. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Roll warm churro sticks in the mixture until well coated. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, use coconut oil or dairy-free margarine instead of butter.
- Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free adaptation.
- Replace eggs with flaxseed eggs to make it vegan.
- Try adding citrus zest or other spices for flavor variation.
