Churro Sticks

  • Author: Chef Bella
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Churro sticks are crispy, golden pastries with a fluffy interior, coated in cinnamon sugar. Originating from Spanish and Mexican traditions, they are perfect for festive occasions and sweet cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the butter melts and the mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat.
  2. Add flour all at once and stir vigorously until a smooth dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 2 minutes).
  3. Let the dough cool for 5 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until the dough is smooth and shiny.
  4. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Preheat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Pipe dough directly into the hot oil, cutting into 4–6 inch lengths. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Roll warm churro sticks in the mixture until well coated. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, use coconut oil or dairy-free margarine instead of butter.
  • Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free adaptation.
  • Replace eggs with flaxseed eggs to make it vegan.
  • Try adding citrus zest or other spices for flavor variation.
