Description

Hong Kong Style French Toast is a crispy, golden treat with a soft and fluffy center, commonly served with powdered sugar and sweet syrup or condensed milk. Popular in Hong Kong tea restaurants, it’s a quick, comforting dish perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of white bread (thick-cut preferred)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole milk recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Butter (for frying)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Maple syrup or condensed milk (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until combined. Add milk, sugar, and vanilla extract (if using). Mix until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt about 1 tablespoon of butter.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Let excess drip off.
  4. Place the dipped bread onto the skillet. Fry each side for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Transfer to paper towels to drain any extra butter.
  6. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup or condensed milk.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free bread for a gluten-free version.
  • For a dairy-free option, use almond or oat milk and dairy-free butter.
  • Swap sugar with honey or agave syrup for a natural sweetener.
  • Try almond extract instead of vanilla for a different flavor profile.
