Description
Hong Kong Style French Toast is a crispy, golden treat with a soft and fluffy center, commonly served with powdered sugar and sweet syrup or condensed milk. Popular in Hong Kong tea restaurants, it’s a quick, comforting dish perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of white bread (thick-cut preferred)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk (whole milk recommended)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Butter (for frying)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
- Maple syrup or condensed milk (for serving)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until combined. Add milk, sugar, and vanilla extract (if using). Mix until the sugar dissolves.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt about 1 tablespoon of butter.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Let excess drip off.
- Place the dipped bread onto the skillet. Fry each side for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
- Transfer to paper towels to drain any extra butter.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup or condensed milk.
Notes
- Use gluten-free bread for a gluten-free version.
- For a dairy-free option, use almond or oat milk and dairy-free butter.
- Swap sugar with honey or agave syrup for a natural sweetener.
- Try almond extract instead of vanilla for a different flavor profile.
