Description

A rich and decadent Red Velvet Cake with a twist—layers of gooey cookie dough for an indulgent Southern-inspired treat. This cake combines classic flavors with a fun texture contrast, making it perfect for any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for cookie dough)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for cookie dough)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add buttermilk, vegetable oil, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans evenly.
  6. Prepare the cookie dough by creaming together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
  7. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, salt, and flour until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  8. Scoop small spoonfuls of the chilled cookie dough and gently press into the cake batter in each pan.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean.
  10. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting or serving.

Notes

  • Chill the cookie dough before adding to batter to help it hold its shape while baking.
  • Do not overmix the batter to maintain the cake’s soft, tender texture.
  • Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant red hue.
