Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add buttermilk, vegetable oil, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans evenly.
- Prepare the cookie dough by creaming together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, salt, and flour until combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Scoop small spoonfuls of the chilled cookie dough and gently press into the cake batter in each pan.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting or serving.
