- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, combine sliced strawberries with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and set aside to macerate for 15-20 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, 1 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat together butter, milk, vanilla extract, and eggs until smooth, then add to dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- In a large bowl, beat heavy cream until thick, then gradually add powdered sugar and lemon zest until soft peaks form.
- Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread whipped cream and half of the macerated strawberries, then top with the second layer and repeat.
- Frost the sides with extra whipped cream for a clean finish, or leave them bare for a rustic look. Garnish with fresh strawberries if desired.
