  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter (for topping)
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for cake)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar (for swirl)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for swirl)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter. Stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar until dissolved. Add sliced apples and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Pour this mixture into the bottom of the greased pan.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup brown sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon to make the cinnamon swirl.
  6. Pour the cake batter over the apple mixture in the pan. Dollop the cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter and swirl using a knife or toothpick.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter.
  9. Serve warm with optional whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
