- 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar (for topping)
- 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter (for topping)
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for cake)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar (for swirl)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for swirl)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter. Stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar until dissolved. Add sliced apples and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Pour this mixture into the bottom of the greased pan.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, whisk together milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup brown sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon to make the cinnamon swirl.
- Pour the cake batter over the apple mixture in the pan. Dollop the cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter and swirl using a knife or toothpick.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter.
- Serve warm with optional whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
