- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips optional
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, then mix in the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin).
Pour batter into pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Cool completely.
